Jewellery Care

Over time you may find your silver darkens, this is a chemical reaction called tarnishing.

I use both 925 sterling and 999 fine silver in my pieces. While sterling tarnishes more easily, fine can also develop a matt grey oxide on its surface, or yellow over time.

Humidity, pollution, sulphur in the environment, chemicals you come into contact with like chlorine and bromine in pools, cleaning products, toiletries and cosmetics can all speed up silver tarnishing, or cause your sea glass to lose its lustre. Even perspiration and the acidity of your skin can have an impact.

Don't worry! A small amount of care and maintenance will keep your jewellery shining brighter than the first time you met.

  • Wear as often as possible

The oils in your skin prevent the silver from reacting to sulphur in the air, slowing down the tarnishing process.

  • Keep moisture & sunlight out

Moisture & sunlight can speed up tarnishing, store your piece alone in a jewellery box, pouch, or ziplock bag.

  • Store with anti-tarnish strip

Replace at least every 3 months. These absorb atmospheric pollutants, slowing the tarnishing process.

  • Clean & polish frequently

Clean silver with a professional cleaning product (baking soda or lemon are a natural alternative). Buff with a treated polishing cloth to bring back the shine. To awaken the lustre of your sea glass, dab with a little baby oil & let it air dry.

  • Never wear in water

Fresh, treated nor salted! Like doing dishes, showering, swimming, hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas.

  • Remove for heavy work

Remove before doing heavy and dirty work such as cleaning, gardening, diy and decorating.

  • Avoid contact with chemicals

Like toiletries, cosmetics, perfume, cleaning products and bleach. Chlorine in pools, and salt water.
